MUNCIE – A year after falling short in the final match, second-ranked Muncie Central (35-4) swept its way to the Class 4A state championship Nov. 7 with a 25-19, 25-23, 25-16 victory over top-ranked Elkhart Memorial at Ball State University.

Muncie Central, a four-game championship game victim of Indianapolis Cathedral in 2008, left no doubt this time around in overwhelming Elkhart Memorial (36-3) from the outset. It was the sixth state championship for Muncie Central in the sport and its second under coach Wes Lyon, who last guided the team to the top in 2004.
The Bearcats swept Center Grove (33-4) 22, 21, and 25 earlier in the day following Elkhart Memorial’s memorable five game slugfest with No. 3 Floyd Central (35-4). In that semifinal opener, the Chargers were extended 19-25, 25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 16-14 before finally advancing past the Highlanders, who were denied their first-ever volleyball title in their third straight 4A finals appearance.
Despite an apparent ACL in jury to 5’8” junior middle hitter Marquita Marshall late in Game 1, Muncie Central never wavered in the nightcap at Worthen Arena. The Bearcats were led by 5’9” junior outside hitter Jamie Drummer’s 14 kills and 13 digs vs. Memorial, while 5’9” senior Abbie Allardt and 5’8” classmate Alyssa Sorrell added 10 kills each and 5’6” junior setter Christina Leblanc added 31 assists.
Five-foot-10 senior middle hitter Brittany Anglemyer led all players with 17 kills for the Chargers, while 5’6” senior outside hitter Krystle Troyer put down 10 kills and had a team-high nine digs. Brianna Moore, a 5’10” junior setter, had a game-high 36 assists.
Elkhart Memorial, coached by Jacquie Rost, was making its fourth visit to the state finals and second to the final match (the Chargers were the 4A runner-up to New Castle in 2007).
Center Grove’s Dooms selected for Mental Attitude Award
Following the match, Sarah Dooms of Center Grove was named winner of the 2009 Mental Attitude Award in 4A volleyball by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented a scholarship check for $1,000 to the school in her name.
Since 1989, more than $575,000 in college scholarships has been presented by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance to deserving high school students in Indiana. The award is presented annually to a senior in each classification who best demonstrates excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership, and athletic ability.
Dooms, who helped Center Grove to its first appearance in the volleyball state finals since 2000, has been an Academic All-Conference selection all four years. Currently a National Honor Society member, Sarah serves as an RSVP facilitator, a senior seminar leader, and a freshmen ambassador.
With a 4.0 GPA, Dooms ranks 11th in her senior class of more than 550 students and has been named Academic All-State. The daughter of Peter and Lois Dooms of Greenwood plans to attend Valparaiso University and study education.
